The Cobbler & Cordwainer was founded in Lincoln Massachusetts in 1977 by David Ulan to provide shoe and leather products and services to the local and larger communities. The company built it's reputation on Mr. Ulan's leatherworking skills and experience in footwear. In 1993 the company moved to New York. Clients served by C&C are retail names like LL Bean, Eastern Mountain Sports, REI, and manufacturers including Vasque, Merrell, Lowa, Scarpa, Raichle, and Birkenstock. The company has adapted continuosly over the years responding to the US shoe and leather markets. After 2001 David downsized the company to focus specifically on his shoemaking and related work.

Today David makes custom shoes to order for men and ladies by hand in his fully equipped New Rochelle footwear lab. He also makes footwear prototypes and samples, and does consulting with small companies and independent designers. As a certified pedorthist Mr. Ulan fills prescriptions, designing and making custom shoes and orthotics for persons with special needs or foot deformities. For all clients David's priority is always on well made and fitted, functional footwear using the best materials and workmanship.

Passing it on: "Currently I am a senior footwear instructor at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) Manhattan, and a technical assistant to Ars Sutoria School in Milan, Italy. I accept students for tutoring and I'm planning short workshops in my New Rochelle location. I thought this would be a lost trade as little as 15 years ago, but there is an explosion of new people learning shoe making. And it has become my great pleasure to pass on the knowedge I've accumulated over decades of making footwear." David Ulan.
